MAT gets deficit funding to turn around £800k deficit

The Royston Schools Academy Trust has been issued with a financial notice to improve - it has already received £150k of 'deficit funding' and will receive a further £650k to be repaid by August 2021.

An article in the Royston Crow said the 'loan' was interest free and reported David Brynjolffssen, chair of the RSAT board, claiming the losses were due to a fall in the number of school-aged children in the town - despite the population of Royston rising fast: 'We identified the falling roll back in 2008 and figured out there would be trouble ahead.'

Paul Boulton, a member of the RSAT board and governor at the Meridian School, said: 'We see this as a ‘bridging loan’ to help us get past what is a temporary problem.'
