Labour-led council says it cannot stand in way of Harris expansion

A story in My Local Guardian details £130m plans for schools in Merton showing Harris is likely to be the main beneficiary.

A comment posted below the story reports a Labour Party meeting at which 'the Leader of Merton Council, Stephen Alabmbritis, said he is not ''King Canute'' and couldn't hold back the tide of free schools.'

The author of the comment,  'Dalph' went on to say: 'Despite the meeting voting against a free school... we were told that the Council might realistically have to go with this as it was the "only option and as the site is too small it could also mean that Joseph Hood Primary would become part of the Harris Group"... We were told that Harris Academy was the only realistic option because there was no money to build a secondary school otherwise.' The comment said the meeting was told 'there was no time to look for other options.'
