Fee paying school scraps free school plans over faith cap

From the Liverpool Echo: (St Mary’s College) has scrapped plans to become a free school after a clash with the Archdiocese of Liverpool... (which)refused to back its application because of the Government’s decision to impose a 50% cap on the number of pupils admitted to free schools on the basis of their faith.'

The paper said the school argued the rule would have made little change to its composition adding that the school would look to raise funds to help more prospective pupils whose families were unable to afford the school’s fees.

It said an option of becoming a Christian school was ruled out by the new governing body of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, who own the land and the buildings of the school.
