New Oakwood Grange head steps in at Scunthorpe academy

A new head has started at a failing Scunthorpe converter academy as it joins Oakwood Grange Academies Trust. The old head left unexpectedly early. The Scunthorpe Telegraph reported: 'Angela Hull has taken charge of the school (Invenio Academy), which will become Outwood Academy Foxhills on September 1, replacing Richard Briggs – who has agreed to become the new head teacher at Baysgarth School from September.'

A note on the school's website from the Easter Term said: 'You may have seen a report in the Scunthorpe Telegraph about our principal, Mr Briggs, obtaining a new position at another local school. It is with regret that some of you will have learnt about this change in our leadership this way as we, and Mr Briggs himself, wished to communicate this to you directly ourselves. Mr Briggs was offered the post of headteacher from September 2014 at another school just before we broke up for Easter. This did not afford him time to communicate this with yourselves or his staff before the academy holidays. When the newspaper learnt about his appointment, Mr Briggs asked them to delay publication of the story until we had returned to school so he could inform everyone of this change himself. Unfortunately they did not do this.

We apologise if the way that this information has been communicated has caused anyone upset.

Mr Briggs has been instrumental in starting the transformation of Invenio Academy from a school which had failed its students to one where the future is bright. Mr Briggs along with the governing body has put in place many changes to the infrastructure of the building to allow normal timetables lessons to run and put in place a curriculum which affords students the best chance to succeed. Most importantly, together, we brokered the sponsorship of our academy with one of the country’s most successful multi-academy trusts – Outwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT).

Under the sponsorship of OGAT we have already seen rapid improvements even before we officially become Outwood Academy Foxhills in September. We have also seen a great number of very experienced OGAT senior staff be deployed to provide capacity in leadership, administration and, most importantly, in teaching and learning. The work of OGAT’s Directors of English, Maths, Science and Performing Arts along with the proven systems and structures that OGAT has used to great success in schools similar to ours has already started to give our academy a secure and strong future. Sir Michael Wilkins, National Leader of Education and the Academy Principal and Chief Executive of OGAT has deployed, permanently to our academy, Mr Martyn Oliver who is also a National Leader of Education as our Executive Principal. Mr Oliver has overseen the transformation of our systems to date and was part of the Ofsted inspection which recognised the work and strength of OGAT.

The governing body and OGAT are committed to providing an outstanding education for the students and community of Outwood Academy Foxhills. OGAT will provide a principal who is very experienced and knowledgeable in their systems to work under Mr Oliver which will see even faster improvements for our academy in the months and years to come. The future for our students is secure.

In this last term of the academic year, Mr Oliver along with Mr Briggs, all the staff at the academy and the governing body will continue to work hard to secure positive outcomes for students and make Outwood Academy Foxhills a school the community can be proud of.

As evidence of the impressive work of OGAT and the expectations we can have for our academy please see the link below to a newspaper story on Outwood Academy Portland which was in special measures two years ago and just recently obtained an Outstanding judgement in every Ofsted category.

Lastly, I am sure that you all, along with the governing body, will want to wish Mr Briggs every success in his future post and thank him for his hard work and leadership of Invenio Academy.

Kind regards

Sue Hague

Chair of Invenio Academy governing body
