The Telegraph and Argus in Bradford has reported on the rents paid by free schools. The data for the report came from https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/capital-funding-for-open-free-schools and shows that 7 out of the 39 free schools included pay rent on a lease.
The newspaper's report said the King's Science Academy 'cost £10,451,327 to build and, because it does not own the site, has to pay an annual rent of £296,000 to landowners the Hartley group... owned by Alan Lewis, a Conservative Party vice-chairman'.
The report provided a comment from the DfE saying this was the market rate adding that the academy was looking to join a multi-academy trust which will then take responsibility for that cost.
The report added that the 'only free school in the country to pay more rent for its site is the London Academy of Excellence... almost £397,000 a year.'
The figures also show how much was paid for sites - the most expensive being Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School (£3,585,741) - and the cost of construction (King's Science is also top of this list too at £10,414,516).
