Croydon council investigates academy chain pre-exam pupil 'disappearance'

From the Croydon Advertiser:

'THE council has asked “one or two” academy chains to explain why some pupils at its schools in Croydon ‘disappear’ before their exam year.'

This Croydon Advertiser story followed-up the Guardian's 'strange case of the vanishing GCSE pupils' which said: 'Two of England's largest academy chains, the Harris Federation and Oasis Community Learning, have several schools each on the list of those whose 2013 GCSE year group shrank the most over the period 2010-2013, and especially during 2012-13.

Harris runs six academies in Croydon with two more due to open.

The Croydon Advertiser reported 'councillor Sean Fitzsimons, who raised the issue with the council, said: “I’m reassured that the council is investigating but to be fully reassured it has to be done in a transparent way.

“I get the impression that the council would not want any problems with its academy providers to be out in the open, but this is a serious issue which warrants further explanation.”'
