Merger, MAT and possible new build for Somerset schools

From the Western Gazette: 'A NEW primary school could be built outside Somerton town centre - Monteclefe Academy and Somerton Infant School are set to merge into one primary school split across two sites later this year.

The two (have a capacity of 180, currently have 173 pupils - but demand will rise as dplanning permission has been granted for 133 homes at Northfield and 150 homes at Langport Road) - are on different sites and have one headteacher, David Norton who is currently working on joining the schools together in multi-academy trust... He is also seeking £35,000 to fund a feasibility study to look at building a completely new primary school.

According to the paper, Michael Gove, who met Mr Norton, said: 'I have heard Somerton is going to have a significant increase in its population ... The headteacher made a compelling case and I am going to go away and think hard about what we can do to help.'
