North East England nearly one in three secondary schools now an academy

From the BBC: 'Around three in 10 secondary schools in the North East are now academies, according to new official figures' - believed to have been gathered for BBC Sunday Politics (6 days on iplayer - 52 mins and 50 seconds into the piece).

In it BBC Reporter Luke Walton says there were only 10 academies in the North East four years ago, now there are 150. The piece involves a short interview with executive head of Excelsior Academy, Phil Marshall.

Figures from North Tyneside - (the areas covered by the BBC showed much higher rates including 100% in Darlington) are:

'There are 55 primary schools in North Tyneside - one of which is an academy.

'We have 15 secondary, including middle schools, and again, one of these is an academy

'We have one all-through school for children aged five to 18, which is an academy, and formed as a result of a state primary joining with an independent all-through school (Kings Priory).'
